As you travel through downtown Pittsburgh or on one of the many highways that surround the city, obviously, you’ll be sharing the road with many others.

While sharing the road is all part of life as a driver, remember that not everyone takes the same level of caution as you.

Common causes of car accidents

As a driver, you need to understand the most common causes of car accidents. With this information in mind, you may be able to make decisions that keep you safe and sound.

  • Distracted driving. This includes many things, such as texting, talking on the phone, changing the radio station, and talking with passengers. When a driver is not concentrating on the road, he or she is more likely to cause an accident.
  • Drunk driving. Unfortunately, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol remains a major problem in today’s modern world.
  • Speeding. It’s important to follow the rules of the road at all times. This includes speed limits.
  • Reckless driving. This can mean many things, such as failure to yield, failure to stop at a traffic signal, and changing lanes too quickly.
  • Weather conditions. When the rain begins to fall, for example, it’s imperative that drivers alter their approach. Neglecting to do so increases the likelihood of an accident.

What to do after an accident

If you are part of a motor vehicle accident, regardless of the cause, you should focus your attention on your health and well being.

From there, you can turn your attention to your legal rights. For example, if somebody else is responsible for the accident, you may be in position to file a lawsuit with the hope of receiving compensation.
