Looking at 2016 drunk driving data from NHTSA

If you had to guess how many people died in drunk driving accidents in 2016, how many people would you guess? Most people would put the figure somewhere in the thousands, but probably not much more than that. However, in 2016, there were actually 10.497 deaths related to drunk driving, averaging out to roughly 29 per day.

What's more is that these accidents caused about $44 billion worth of damage and deaths. That's a staggering figure. These accidents are so outrageous, mainly because they are so preventable. They simply shouldn't happen. People who are inebriated shouldn't be behind the wheels of a car because they inherently have a reduced capacity to make quick decisions and an increased chance of being in a car accident.

There are some very simple steps that everyone can take to reduce drunk driving. First, if you have consumed alcohol you should not drive anywhere. Also, if you see someone who has consumed alcohol and is trying to drive his or her car, you should do everything in your power to prevent them from driving. Arrange a ride home for them to ensure their safety. Last but not least, if you are out on the road and you see someone swerving or operating their vehicle in a fashion that would have you believe they are intoxicated, call the police.

Drunk driving is negligent and horrible. Accidents are much more likely around drunk drivers, and they make themselves liable should an accident occur because of their reckless actions.
