Mail carriers are getting attacked by dogs far less

On Behalf of | Apr 9, 2018 | Dog Bites |

According to the United States Postal Service (USPS), dog attacks against mail carriers in the Central Pennsylvania area have significantly declined since 2016. The USPS said that the number of attacks has dropped by 40 percent, and that in 2017 there were only 68 such attacks. The USPS said that they credit mace and mail satchels as part of the reason why dog attacks against their employees have dropped, in addition to the overall awareness of dog owners.

This is certainly great news, and we welcome the fact that dog owners are getting better about controlling there dogs in any context, especially under the guise of mail carriers. But we still say that 68 dog attacks is 68 too many.

In most cases, dogs are properly trained and socialized by their owners, or by whatever dog shelter, society, or foster home raises the animal. These dogs go on to be great family friends, and other people are comfortable around these dogs. But some dogs are not raised properly, are not socialized and, as a result, they become ticking time bombs that could lunge, bite, or attack at any moment. This can even happen with a well-trained dog, in fact. Sometimes they just snap, or their instincts get the better of them.

The victims of dog bites can be brutally injured, and may carry those scars — both physical and mental — for the rest of their lives. They deserve justice, and the owners must be held responsible.
