What to do if you’re involved in a traffic crash

On Behalf of | Jun 24, 2019 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Traffic crashes can happen close to home, while you’re riding your bike and even in front of your house on a residential street.

The law protects victims of accidents by allowing them to make claims for compensation against the at-fault party.

What can you do if you’ve been involved in a traffic accident?

There are five things to do after an accident. These include:

  • Calling for emergency help
  • Exchanging information
  • Getting medical treatment
  • Contacting your attorney
  • Filing a claim

Each of these steps are essential in helping you get the compensation you need after an accident.

Do you have to go to the hospital after a crash?

After a crash, you don’t have to go to the hospital, but it is advisable for a few reasons. One reason is that some injuries will not present immediately. That means that you could be hurt and not know it. These injuries, called delayed-onset injuries, can result in serious complications in some cases, so having a medical exam is essential to prevent that from happening.

You should also go to a hospital after a crash to make sure that you’re documenting your injuries. Good documentation goes a long way when you want to make an insurance claim. Being able to show that you were hurt and that you took the time to go to a hospital is important when you’re filing a claim.

What happens if you can’t exchange information with the other driver?

There are times when you may not be able to exchange information due to your injuries or because of the other party’s injuries. In those cases, let your attorney know that you didn’t get the opportunity to exchange information. They’ll be able to reach out to law enforcement and find out what you need to know to make a claim against the other party or to get into contact with them.

If you are badly hurt, you can refer all aspects of the case to your attorney and allow them to take care of everything. They will let you know if the other person’s insurance attempts to make a settlement with you.
