Vaping deaths, injuries spark lawsuits against manufacturers

Vaping was supposed to be a safer alternative to cigarettes, and it was quickly adopted by millions of people around the nation.

Now, in the wake of several deaths and hundreds of injuries related to e-cigarettes and vaping, many consumers are angry. They feel misled by the safety claims of many e-cigarette manufacturers and targeted for exploitation. Now, three teenage victims are taking on some of the major manufacturers of e-cigarettes. The New Jersey teens have filed lawsuits accusing Juul Lab Inc., Altria Group Inc. and PAX Labs Inc. of targeting young people with their advertising and products and misrepresenting the dangers of vaping.

While Juul and the other companies have maintained that their products were only marketed toward current adult smokers, others disagree. They point to the copious amounts of advertising done by the manufacturers of vaping cartridges and products on social media and claim that it directly targeted younger teens. At least one of the plaintiffs started vaping when he was only a freshman in high school. He claims that his nicotine addiction has led to cognitive difficulties, declining grades and behavioral problems, as well as a recent hospitalization.

It's highly unlikely that these will be the only cases filed against e-cigarette makers and retailers. Recently, high levels of vitamin E acetate have been detected in a number of vape products. Vitamin E can be toxic when inhaled and may be linked to the recent spate of vape injuries and deaths across numerous states. There are also some serious questions about the warning labels -- or lack thereof -- that were on popular vaping products when they were first marketed.

If you've been injured by e-cigarettes, you aren't alone. It may be possible to make the manufacturer pay for your injuries and losses through a product liability claim. Find out more about your legal options today.
