Avoid a slip-and-fall accident this Halloween

Are you getting ready to escort a princess or a pirate through the neighborhood to collect candy during this year's annual Halloween festivities? If so, take the time to review these tips that can help protect you and your child from slip-and-fall accidents.

1. Wear non-slip shoes

There are usually a lot of leaves on the ground by the time Halloween rolls around. The concrete can get slippery from the decaying leaves and the moisture in the cool autumn air. Make sure that you and your child are both wearing nonslip footwear that has a suitable tread.

2. Always use crosswalks

When you rush, you're more prone to falling -- and that can be deadly if it happens in the street. Don't jaywalk just to get to another house. Walk all the way to the end of the block and use the crosswalks. (Don't forget to enforce the rules about looking both ways before stepping off the curb, just to be safe!)

3. Don't walk in yards

It can be very tempting -- especially when you start getting tired -- to cut across a neighbor's yard. That can also be unnecessarily dangerous. Aside from the hazards from slick leaves and mud, you can trip over everything from tree roots to lawn decorations. Stick to the walkways from the sidewalk to the door.

4. Avoid poorly maintained homes

Skip any houses that you see that don't look well-maintained. If there isn't enough light to see the walk and steps to the house clearly, pass it by. The same goes if you see a porch with a missing handrail or broken steps. It's far too easy for kids to trip and fall on their costumes when there are hazards around.

Hopefully, this Halloween will be everything you and your kids hope it will be. If an accident happens, remember that homeowners may be liable for slip-and-fall accidents that occur to their negligence. If a serious injury happens, contact our office to discuss your case further.
