What are the real odds of a dog bite?

If you've never met a dog that you didn't like, you may not realize just how common dog bites can actually be. Unfortunately, many people end up bitten simply because they see every dog as "man's best friend" and don't realize that some dogs just...well, aren't friendly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are around 4.7 million dog bites every year in the United States alone. Around 800,000 of those bites will send the victim to an emergency room -- and it's likely that many more people should go, but don't.

You can reduce your chances of being bitten by remembering the following:

  • Even a good, gentle dog can bite under stressful situations.
  • Dogs can bite if they misinterpret your intentions toward their humans. (For example, reaching to hand a package to a dog's owner can be misinterpreted by the dog as aggression.)
  • Dogs are more likely to bite you if they have puppies or their owners are afraid.
  • Young dogs sometimes nip or "mouth" people as part of their play -- but if they break the skin, you're as exposed to the same potential problems that you would have from an aggressive bite.
  • Any bite that breaks the skin is serious because of the risk of infection. Dogs carry a ton of bacteria in their mouths that can be harmful to human beings, so a bite that bleeds should always be seen by a doctor and antibiotics should be considered.

If you or your child ends up being one of the millions of people bitten by a friend's, relative's or neighbor's dog, you shouldn't have to struggle to pay the bills for your medical care or live with the scars from the bite without compensation. Talk to an attorney today about your legal options.
