4 tips to avoid dog bites while delivering holiday packages

How much could a little dog bite cost you, really?

Would you believe an average of $35,424 per victim? That's roughly how much each of the 780 victims in Pennsylvania was awarded for their medical bills and other losses last year. In fact, PA is the sixth most dangerous state in the nation for dog bites even though it requires owners with so-called "dangerous dogs" to pay extra fees and observe special rules.

Because of the cost of a dog bite is high (both personally and financially), let's talk about ways to reduce your risk of a bite if you're one of the many people delivering packages this holiday season. Here are some rules to follow:

  1. Look for warning signs. If you see a "Beware of Dog" sign or any posting warning you of a dangerous dog on the premises, you know to be extra careful.
  2. Do not enter a yard with a visible dog or a house with an open door. Even a friendly-looking dog can turn aggressive if you cross into his territory.
  3. When you come to a door with a package that has to be personally delivered, ask the homeowner to put any dogs in another room before opening the door. Dogs will sometimes mistake the process of someone handing over a package as an act of aggression toward their owners.
  4. Finally, if you don't feel safe delivering the package, don't do it. Make use of the customer's information to leave a message and arrange for a pickup or turn the issue over to your supervisor.

The holiday season tends to put a lot of overexcited dogs in close proximity with strangers of all kinds. Anybody can end up the victim of a serious dog bite. If you've been injured, find out how you might be due compensation for your losses.
