The relationship between speed and crash injuries

On Behalf of | Mar 22, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents, Personal Injury |

You may experience a number of injuries after being involved in a motor vehicle accident while traveling in Pennsylvania, and this is true regardless of the severity of the crash. However, as a general rule, the faster a vehicle is traveling at impact, the greater the risk of serious injuries.

Higher speeds create more energy

The primary reason why traveling at a high rate of speed increases the risk is that greater force is exerted at impact. Therefore, more energy is transferred from the vehicle that strikes your car to your vehicle and anything inside of it. You may be especially vulnerable to experiencing catastrophic injuries if you are not wearing a seat belt at the moment of impact. This is because you may be ejected from the car or forced to move in an awkward or unnatural manner when this happens.

You could be struck by an object

A vehicle that is hit at a high rate of speed may experience significant damage. You could be struck by flying glass or by other objects that may come loose after impact. These objects may be traveling at high rates of speed when they strike you, which may make it more likely that you’ll experience a concussion, broken bones or other ailments in a car accident. If you aren’t wearing a seat belt, you could be thrown into a stationary item such as the back of a seat or a dashboard.

If you’re injured in a car crash, you may have difficulty going back to school or work. You may also struggle to enjoy activities that you took part in prior to the wreck. It may be possible to obtain compensation if you can prove that the crash was caused by another party’s negligence.
