More dog bite data shows problem is worsening

A few weeks ago, we wrote a post about pit bulls and why this breed of dog has such a bad reputation. In part, it is a portrayal in TV shows, movies, and the news that builds them up into this monstrous dog. Another part if the fact that they are, on a biological level, very powerful -- more so than most other dogs. And another part still is that, statistically speaking, they are involved in far more fatal dog bite incidents than any other breed. It isn't even close.

Today we'd like to provide an update to that post, as the statistical information regarding the year 2017 shows that things aren't getting any better. In fact, they are getting much worse.

In 2016, there were 31 fatalities related to dog bites in the United States, and 22 of them involved a pit bull (71 percent of fatal attacks). In 2017, that number jumped to 30 fatalities related to dog bites, and 29 of them involved a pit bull (74 percent of fatal attacks).

These statistics are particularly bad on both fronts. It shows that dog attacks are becoming worse in general, but that pit bulls are also increasingly more involved in them. Dog owners have to go to great lengths to ensure that their dogs are properly secured in the first place. But a longer-term goal is to ensure that they are properly socialized and are safe animals to be around at all.
